My husband taught JR TECH COLLEGE for Electronics, Math, and Computer Science, for 20 years, before that he spent 20 years in the USN as Avionic on Flight Decks, taught A/B School which are much shorter, and faster courses when on shore duty. The kids from the bad schools in the big city in our county, were HANDED GRADES, not earned grades. Those had to have REMEDIAL MATH CLASSES, supposed A/B Students were that math poor. While the rest of the county schools made them learn Math, his Foreign Students excelled at math. He retired after 20 years as Dept. Chair, and saw NO changes from the big city school system. All the smaller towns sued to have their own school systems, when the Big city dropped its School Charter over the High Cost of teacher pay, and to disperse the low state scores.
Along came Covid, masks retarded learning, in the lowest grades, especially for those with hearing or speech disabilities, FJB JUST LOWERED THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WHOLE USA. Now States find that children are struggling to meet State Standards.
As a Hearing Impaired adult from Meniere's disease I struggled to understand not just Masked people, people who don't speak English well, and those who wear full beards. 1% of Americans use ASL. MOST LIP READ. The available programs are child orientated. Not for Adults who lose part or all of their hearing. After 2 Meniere's Attacks, I wear Flight Deck level Hearing Aids, and still have trouble with cellphone's, I use Chat, Text, or email the written word just works better. I have full speech ability. And my English teacher was old school when it came to proper speech.
The next attack I will be Deaf, and NO Ins pays for the $90K Cochlear Implants especially for a Senior. As former Military my husband might qualify at 82 I doubt it. There is a 2-4 year learning curve to learn to use a Cochlear Implant. I hear the very loud Tinnitus even without Hearing Aids.
I do bristle (back of neck? I guess) at the idea that 'It was a Russian botanist and agriculturist, Michurin (1855 — 1935), who first cross-bred species of fruit trees successfully' as humans have been at plant breeding for much longer. One specific would be to look at the selective breeding that became the grains as we know them, still in great variety, mostly by human endeavor, and of course the breeding livestock. The variety of types of corn derives from human crossbreeding. So, maybe the first record Wikipedia lists is ....possibly....kind of.....ignoring millenia.

Often, I had to ask muzzled people to take it off, because I couldn't understand what they were saying.
