The inventor of Germ Theory, Pasteur, admitted in his diary that his last descandant donated to Princeton University in 2014 that he was a fraud. Indeed, even the existence of infectious diseases has never been proven, either.
As "Mr. Smith" puts it in The Matrix, humanity is the virus. :) That is a good allegory, if one takes the myth of viral theory for granted, instead of the fallacy it is. Humanity certainly has always had a knack for using up its resources and move to another territory. After all, all "great" empires thrived on exploiting their resources and died, once the resourced had been depleted.
