Thank you Ray. Apparently "snake oil salesmen" came from the new, emerging Rockefeller medicine industry, to discredit the "peddlers" of natural solutions.
1. Salvation Army got into the real estate business, least here in NY, and ended up tradin' brick n' mortar stores that helped people into profits on a MASS scale. Nearly all the SA stores in NYC closed and the org. cashed in on the profits.
Our local SA had employed 75 local people--yup, not hired from other neighborhoods, all local nice folks. They were given the minimum notice--2 or 3 weeks--even though some people had been there 25 years. In our very modest neib the SA was one of the only affordable places for famlies, elderly, many others -- we were regulars as my kids grew and sized up. VERY reasonable prices and all that...
When they closed it was like a secret deal--and this happened all over NYC. The employees we spoke to were very sad the way the higher ups did this. Did they REALLY need the millions in real estate? What about the service they provided? Was that not the point of the charity?
They are flush with big-city Real Estate money so maybe don't need yer hard earned donations...just sayin'
2. Girlscouts've been woke for years and they rip off the kids too. Some of this rung unethical to me so we quit...
Three examples...
Round 1. when my daughter's troop wanted to sell potted plants, GSA inc. gets like 75 percent of the profits--same for all sales of non-licensed materials. One of the badges is in business--what a terrible business model they have in ripping off young girls...who would enter a contract where you do the work and give away 75% of the profits? GONG! (like the Gong show!)
Round 2... Some of our families did NOT feel good buyin' and sellin' unhealthy GMO GirlScout cookies so we wanted to bake our own organic ones. We went to HQ in Manhattan and they said NO. Not possible. They make you buy THEIR cookies and sell only their licensed ones. It was a "to do" so some of us moms quit and I formed another group of scouts which had no mandatory purchases and we actually got out in nature a LOT more.
Round 3 --some of the most important events cost a LOT. Fer example, here in NY one of the big ones was a march across the Brooklyn Bridge (you kin do this fer FREE on any day btw). Cost $50 per girl to participate and EXTRA for any parents (I think $35 per parent and that was back a decade ago) . REALLY? Over half of us couldn't afford that for a 2 hour walk. They also do a special weekend camp annually at Frost Valley that cost hundreds per girl--that is just WRONG given that we all paid dues--no scholarships offered. Again, those who couldn't afford to participate felt left out--many tears in our troop when we all gathered and those who attended bragged about their special weekend. I was so t'd off I created an alternate event the next month--a free one--overnight--with a park ranger teachin' the girls to build fires and make tents and camp out and all that -- I even led the sing-along (ha ha) So makin' lemonade of all that and perhaps it's good ya have the GREED Scouts of Amerika cuz it sure motivated me to create our own better n' free version.
SO... not sure how long ago yer fambly participated--but they've changed a LOT lately. As I said, they are now WOKE too... they took funding that made them compromise all printed matter n' messaging... a mom showed me some stuff a while back and I was not happy... all that equity stuff... instead of just a bunch'a girls gettin' together.. My mom had been one but from all she told me..her experience was a heck've a lot better n' ourn.
FYI, Learning Herbs is a family-run business that teachers kids all about herbal remedies and wildcrafting and foraging. We used their great materials to teach our non-GSA girlscouts (after I quit) AND we could bake all the organic stuff we wanted to do fundraisers--and did! (They're not a charity but their educational material is far better than GSA stuff now...and hey, learnin' to chew on a plantain if ya get a bug bite is fun)
So, I'm with ya with a yes to giving to friends and folks ya know personally! Even some'a the good charities ain't so good any more...
St Jude's Children's Cancer Hospital, and the Alpha Omega House for Veterans, which is mostly usable furniture, appliances, and clothes. As they set the homeless Vets up in apartments, after drug/booze rehab.
St. Judes uses ONLY allopathic chemo on the kids with cancer.. Cut Poison Burn 2010 movie'll make some folks rethink St Judes... AND chemo in general (I DO think Danny Thomas had his heart in the right place--most folks just didn't know...)
I used to donate to the Lifeboats, but stopped when they went all woke. I still buy a poppy from the Royal British Legion every year though. Other than that, nope, I'm pretty skint, and most "charities" make me want to hurl.
I give the largest donation to our local food bank and then directly to people who cross my path and need support. Used to give to many organizations, but realized most weren’t who they purported to be. I cancelled all my mainstream subscriptions except local paper and use those $$ to support alternatives mainly through Substack. I spend too much time reading them though!🤓
When I lived In MA and deliveries were due to the village survival center, a whole line of cars were following the delivery trucks and the place was emptied out in a couple of hours. Yes, you guessed it righ; it was second-hand dealers from Boston, willing to travel a 100 miles to get all the free stuff, given to them by donors...
Local newspapers are dead, whether you and I support them or not...
Here in Italy local newspapers (or newspapers in general) are not dead because they get gov funding, haha. Comes with a caveat of course. Govt: I pay, I say.
Charity begins at home. Who's suffering in your social circle?
HELP. THEM. FIRST.
"What I absolutely can’t stand is anything that has to do anything with “children’s cancer,” because current cancer treatments only experiment on people, ripping off their insurance and sell their diagnostics, surgically-removed organs (fetuses included) and tissues acquired from biopsies."
I know I'm late to the party here, but I watched a video last night that is excellent. It's about an hour long but it could be listened to while doing something else if anyone interested is pressed for time...and who isn't. I had never heard of this man before this video; but I think all he said...though I've heard some of the things before...was spot-on. Here's the link:
Sorry, too. You are not the problem, but some bots/trolls taking over my discussion sections in the last few days... This is only one of their methods.
Thank you. Yes; it seems to be unavoidable; bots and trolls. Pity.
If I may; I think one reason (Possibly) for people (Not bots) posting comments that have nothing to do with the article is because people are hungry for communication; people want desperately to 'talk' to someone and will take any and every opportunity to do so. We live in a very isolated world; especially; it seems; here in the States. It's not an excuse; but I'm guessing it's one of the reasons for it. I'll do my best from now on though to stick only to comments that have to do with the article. Thanks again.
Non-Profits as well. I had a two day stint fundraising by phone for Sierra Club Hardly environmentally responsible and for older major donors high pressure tactics.
As I’ve already posted, this Christmas I am going to buy coffees for all of those on substack that give away information for free. One such paid subscriber only account (JR) went on a rant about how awful those of us are that can’t afford to give $5 per month for say 20 substackers. That’s $100 while The Daily Telegraph (no longer subscribe to it after all they got @£3.5 Million from Gates) is £2.50 pcm. I can no longer afford Netflix, Amazon or any other subscriber only content.
This is war, and putting a price tag on those of one’s own side is frankly, immoral.
So that’s this years money decided. But I give my good quality old stuff only to local charities such as the hospice, night shelter, and sick children’s support. I also give to the the local food bank. And try to give a percentage of my food shopping to the food bank when I can.
As for Global charities that I used to give to:
Medicine’ Fronteir is a cover charity that uses Soros funds for expedited illegal immigration. I’m against mass immigration as I believe it’s reverse colonialism- stealing the best, and strongest from poor nations that need such people to build up their own nations.
I used to give to Greenpeace when it still cared about orangutans and whales.
I’ve also given to a national equestrian head injury charity . And thinking about it, I might do again this year as it’s a good charity. You see riding causes the second most head injuries behind motorcycle racing. That one’s really bad, my old dentist and I used to talk about how what recent accident caused such and such injury. Sadly, very, very, sadly he lost his life in one such accident.
I’ve had three major kicks to the head leading to unconsciousness, two shoulder impingement surgeries due to tears, numerous strains and pulled muscles and no doubt so many micro brain injuries that I can’t remember them all. Oh forgot the broken nose too and the horse that landed on top of me (unconsciousness again). So I might be one of those who seek such charities in the future.
You see there’s an association with head injuries in repetitive strike injury syndrome.
So DO your due diligence and check them out first. Tbh you’d be better off giving coffee vouchers to the homeless this Christmas then to big charities.
And all that is only a small part of the picture. :) You can find a whole lot of more details in my previous posts. Sorry, some of them are not all that good, but nobody's perfect. :)
A friend of mines wife worked on a charity board there was a disagreement between the members so the board split and the ones who left simply set up another charity!! He even said the whole things one big scam
They are. The Salvation Army, as opposed to Goodwill, operates as visibly useful for those it means to help. Goodwill stores are for-profit and their prices around here are sometimes higher than what the same items cost brand new next door.
Still, a lot depends on the internal logistics and those are not transparent most of the time. "Charities" can also be used as destinations of kickbacks (crap is sold to the taxpayer at exorbitant prices, which is an integral part of "democracy") or they can make contracts for kickbacks and provide unnecessary or even non-existent services. The options for scams are limited only by one's imagination.
Agree with you on this "Goodwill stores are for-profit and their prices around here are sometimes higher than what the same new items cost brand new next door". GW is no deal anymore for useful cheap goods. Too often their items being used, are at the same price one can find new in a store. Nope, GW is definitely not where-its-at anymore.
US tax collection is based on”voluntary compliance.” Is the IRS a charity?
I guess, Al Capone could answer that question. :)
Thank you Ray. Apparently "snake oil salesmen" came from the new, emerging Rockefeller medicine industry, to discredit the "peddlers" of natural solutions.
Agreed fully but a few mild caveats...

Faith heals most.

Cammie,
The problem is that your post doesn't pertain to the subject. I have plenty of articles, where it would fit, but this is not one of them.
Here is an example of the ones addressing the problem:

You're right; my sincere apology; I see you even had to write an article about this.
Ugh. So sorry.

Even our Governmental foreign aid is suspect .
In fact everything is suspect these days !
Oh dear
If you consider the $40 billion to Ukraine, it's more than suspect, wouldn't you say?
USAID, by default, only provides "aid" from taxpayer's money in order to open up "business opportunities" for the owners of US politicians...
Yes,
I would say !
I would also say at this point it feels criminal !!
It has always been criminal:

Ok !
Now I feel adequately educated in fact,…. not fiction
Thank you
Will pass those facts along as they are crucial to understanding the big picture.
